Initially the farm was begun on 5 acres of land in Loxahatchee Groves, FL. In 2012 he began a partnership with the Sturrock family on their historic property in West Palm Beach, on which mangos have been grown since the 1920âs. Since that time all production has been moved to this location. </p>

Alex also grows avocados and sapodillas, along with other tropical fruits. Tropical Acres Farms sells mango budwood, trees, and fruit. More information can be found on his website <a href="https://www.tropicalacresfarms.com/">https://www.tropicalacresfarms.com/</a> , which also has a wealth of information about mango and avocado varieties.</p>

Because the long trip from West Palm Beach would take too much time from Alexâs busy schedule, this monthâs presentation will be virtual. Weâll see Alexâs presentation live on screen, and will be able to ask questions interactively. If this is successful, we hope to have occasional virtual presentations from other experts who would not otherwise be available to us.</p><div><br /></div></span></div>MRFChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10066595746668149737noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4056353755198563244.post-86979425466095126182024-01-17T18:18:00.000-08:002024-01-17T18:18:09.274-08:00February 2024 Meeting - Alyssa Vinson - Mushrooms<p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;">Join us Monday, February 12th, 2024 at 7pm. </span></p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;">Harlee Building/County Fairgrounds, 1303 17th St W, Palmetto, FL 34221<br /><br />Speaker: Alyssa Vinson - Mushrooms<br /></span><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqi47Enj3Colnw_CkQ_XpuSrjVNj-v-2FEmopDgxf3TQ06EH_GdMdsshn-PVcsUWQls6OAeO_iulepnpzJcMvrliGyzGjgR2z9Nn_sTSgdOhpBgx5x-jrlGUcUFNPeEzS96YagL-v09lpr8liJhreiVlX0B6Akypi08fo3DxdasO9Ar0hKjQW_vGauMPI/s960/Alyssa%20Vinson%20black%20and%20white%20photo.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqi47Enj3Colnw_CkQ_XpuSrjVNj-v-2FEmopDgxf3TQ06EH_GdMdsshn-PVcsUWQls6OAeO_iulepnpzJcMvrliGyzGjgR2z9Nn_sTSgdOhpBgx5x-jrlGUcUFNPeEzS96YagL-v09lpr8liJhreiVlX0B6Akypi08fo3DxdasO9Ar0hKjQW_vGauMPI/s320/Alyssa%20Vinson%20black%20and%20white%20photo.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><p style="color: #222222; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;"><span style="font-kerning: none;">Our February 12 speaker will be Alyssa Vinson, an environmental science educator for the past 15 years working in Alaska, Oregon and now Florida. If the common name is well-known, that may be sufficient. Supply the variety name if known; if not, then perhaps some helpful information such as âdwarf banana plantâ or âred-flowered hibiscusâ. If the plant is non-edible, this should be noted. If it is</div><div>a seedling of a fruit like mango or avocado that is usually grafted, label it âseedling for graftingâ.</div><div><br /></div><div>⢠Make your item easy for the winner to transport. For example, put potted plants in plastic bags so thatthey do not leak during transport (the bag just needs to cover the container, or course). Put soft fruit in an open plastic bag or other leak-proof container so that it does not stain if it breaks open.</div><div><br /></div><div>⢠Feel free to put non-plant items on the table. Usually these would be related to horticulture, but other useful items can be considered. If you are unsure whether an item is appropriate, please check with one of the MRFC officers.</div><div><br /></div><div>Collect a free raffle ticket, if you wish, for each item you bring. These will be entered in all rounds of the raffle</div><div>(purchased tickets are entered in all except the first round).</div><div><br /></div><div>PLEASE DO NOT:</div><div>⢠Bring citrus trees for the table. Florida regulations do not allow distribution (or, actually, even propagation) of citrus trees except by growers registered and approved by the Florida Citrus Nursery Stock Certification Program.</div></span></div>MRFChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10066595746668149737noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4056353755198563244.post-59594895950823908502023-09-13T11:46:00.004-07:002023-09-13T11:46:54.690-07:00October Meeting - Dr Ramdas Kanissery<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7jruA4OLTf_56r1Cw1zEXlq-g4XTJ1ZgJ1E3ai0d5qHbAOwvmSonlPfupdKW7Q6crMLTS9SkJcIsS9VG8VEKZC_RIXylAu8AFTJVqMiHm31oIHHFKlquPFcqTuYdmft3PfzdQoKW5mg5TBva-XU-Cx2WoEEBG8mVpzCTlMZ1npH4JgUubVlPV-soJaV4/s742/ramdas-with-spanish-needle.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="557" data-original-width="742" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7jruA4OLTf_56r1Cw1zEXlq-g4XTJ1ZgJ1E3ai0d5qHbAOwvmSonlPfupdKW7Q6crMLTS9SkJcIsS9VG8VEKZC_RIXylAu8AFTJVqMiHm31oIHHFKlquPFcqTuYdmft3PfzdQoKW5mg5TBva-XU-Cx2WoEEBG8mVpzCTlMZ1npH4JgUubVlPV-soJaV4/s320/ramdas-with-spanish-needle.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>Join us Monday, October 9th, 2023 at 7pm. <br /><br />Harlee Building/County Fairgrounds, 1303 17th St W, Palmetto, FL 34221<br /><br />Speaker: Dr. Ramdas Kanissery<br /><br />Our October Speaker<br />From the Program Committee<br /><br />Our October speaker is Dr. Ramdas Kanissery, who leads the Weed Science research and extension program at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center (SWFREC) in Immokalee, FL. On this 5-acre property in residential Delray Beach, she has over 200 fruit trees including over 90 varieties of mangos. Truly Tropical sells fruit and trees, mostly mangos but also <span style="background-color: white;">avocados, carambola, sapodilla, jakfruit, sugar apple, custard apple, black sapote, jaboticaba, canistel, caimito, pitomba, and miracle fruit.</span></span></p>

This will include the history of the farm and her efforts to plant, graft and grow over 90 varieties of mangos. Chris will also talk about how new varieties of mangos are developed, and her own efforts to develop superior mango varieties. Mango varieties that originated at Truly Tropical include âBestâ, âBig Jimâ, Kaeli-Kâ, âCarpe Diemâ and âMarkoâ. </span></p>

Each of them is providing a representative to tell us about<br />their organization:<br /><br />--- Extension Master Gardener Programs now exist in all 50 states and<br />the District of Columbia, several Canadian provinces, and South Korea.<br />We will learn more about these remarkable programs from MRFC member<br />and Florida Master Gardener John Dawson.<br /><br />--- Transition Sarasota is a local food and community-building<br />non-profit that is very active in harvesting otherwise-wasted produce<br />for local food banks and pantries. In particular, its Suncoast Fruit<br />Rescue project organizes volunteers to harvest fruit from commercial<br />or home trees in Sarasota or Manatee Counties, with the owner, the<br />volunteer harvesters, and local food banks sharing the bounty.<br />Executive Director Joyce Norris will represent Transition Sarasota.<br /><br />--- Palma Sola Botanical Park, a longtime friend of the MRFC and the<br />location of our rare fruit tree collection, will be represented by<br />Executive Director Beverly Burdette.<br /><br />After the representatives give brief presentations, weâll have a<br />question-and-answer session with the full panel. We hope to see you<br />there for this unusual opportunity to meet some of the MRFCâs<br />partners.<br /></span><p style="color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 18.75px; margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: auto;"><br /></p>MRFChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10066595746668149737noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4056353755198563244.post-6922635967385482502022-12-03T17:15:00.001-08:002022-12-09T10:43:39.081-08:00Annual Holiday Pot Luck Dinner - RSVP Info in Post<div class="separator"><div style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img align="middle" alt="" class="mcnImage" src="https://mcusercontent.com/a7737869aa678f2cfbbbd6885/images/a0bfda4c-98e1-134d-9a8a-f2c6aca7cf5d.jpg" style="border: 0px; display: inline; max-width: 400px; outline: none; padding-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;" width="400" /></div></div><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"> <span style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">It's December, so instead of a regular meeting, we hope that you will join us for the traditional</span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"> </span><span style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">MRFC Holiday Pot Luck Dinner </span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">on Monday, December 12th at </span></span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Manatee County Fairgrounds Harlee Building, Palmetto, FL</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">. </span> General arrival 6:30 PM.
